Drawing for the Kedzie Metra Station Acrylic, reflective glass beads on foam July 2014
My paintings investigate the possibilities of gesture and color within the formal tradition of painting.
My work is fundamentally about exploring the limits of painting while challenging my own assumptions about what painting can be and can do. My work is informed by abstraction and everyday experiences of being in the human body.
I am interested in making paintings that are as generous and playful as they are intelligent and formally challenging. I currently use spray foam as a three-dimensional, gestural mark-making tool to explore the marks that the body creates, as well as the body or lineament of the gestural mark itself. Experimentation with foam has led me to a new inquiry within my practice about the relationship among painting, sculpture, and architecture.
