My paintings celebrate the unseen microbiological processes that make life on earth possible. Using color, gesture and a wet into wet oil painting technique, I explore the boundless microcosmic physical universe and its relationship to the spiritual. Through my abstract paintings and sculptures, I explore ideas about what it means to be alive, what animates us, and what connects our bodies to our spirits.

As a basis for my paintings, I create sculptures out of balloons, caulk, water and other materials to represent microbiological systems. These sculptures serve not only as “still lives” but age, turning into skeletons as the air and water leave the balloons. I incorporate these skeletons back into paintings, creating new work from old, perpetuating the cycle of life, and investigating the relationship between my paintings and the sculptures that create them. This meditation on the relationship between subject and object frees me to explore new possibilities within my own painting.
